The Sage Group peripheral arterial and venous disease

According to THE SAGE GROUP, In 2006 Over 800,000 Inpatient and OutpatientEndovascular Procedures Were Performed in the Lower Limbs Representing a $1 Billion U.S. Market to Treat Peripheral Arterial Disease.

ATLANTA, January12, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE)—Based on the most recently released hospital data, THE SAGE GROUP has published a new analysis of the Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) interventional market. PAD procedures include revascularization with surgery or endovascular devices, as well as amputation.

According to Mary L. Yost, President of THE SAGE GROUP, “In 2006 approximately 550,000 inpatient procedures were performed in the lower limbs. Over 40% were endovascular procedures (angioplasty, atherectomy and primary stenting) while surgery accounted for slightly more than 30%.”

“The interventional market has undergone dramatic changes,” observed Ms. Yost. “Endovascular, or less-invasive catheter-based procedures, have grown rapidly and taken significant share from surgery. Despite this approximately 150,000 surgical procedures are still performed. We believe that many of these could be candidates for improved endovascular technologies.”

“In the future, we expect that endovascular therapies will continue to take share from surgical procedures so that by 2020 the surgery will decline to less than 10%.” predicted Yost.

“Furthermore, PAD-related primary amputations still exceed 150,000. We believe that if patients are diagnosed and treated at less severe stages of the disease, a significant percentage of these could also be converted to revascularization,” Ms. Yost continued.

According to THE SAGE GROUP, “Peripheral Arterial Disease represents a sizeable and rapidly growing market opportunity for angioplasty and atherectomy devices. Projected market expansion reflects an increasing number of patients diagnosed and treated, as well as new technologies replacing other therapies. This is especially true in the femoropopliteal and tibioperoneal areas.”

Ms. Yost continued, “Our research indicates that femoropopliteal (above knee) disease represents the largest single opportunity for new endovascular devices with procedures forecast to expand to over 1.7 million by 2020. Although much smaller in terms of total procedures, the tibioperoneal (below knee) market is forecast to grow at an extremely rapid pace and exceed 390,000 procedures by 2020.”

About Peripheral Arterial Disease

PAD, also known as Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) orPeripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease (PAOD), is characterized by a reduction of blood flow to the lower limbs due to atherosclerosis, commonly called hardening of the arteries. Atherosclerosis is a disease in which the walls of the arteries thicken and harden as a result of the build-up of fatty deposits (plaque) on their inner lining.

Peripheral Arterial Disease Interventional Market Analysis Based on Treatment with Angioplasty or Atherectomy Report

Employing ICD-9 data, this report analyzes the 2006 PAD interventional market based on treatment with angioplasty or atherectomy devices. THE SAGE GROUP’S PAD Projections Model is employed to forecast endovascular and surgical procedures through 2020.

Angioplasty, atherectomy, primary stent and total endovascular procedures are analyzed by vascular territory in the aortoiliac, femoropopliteal, and tibioperoneal regions and projected through 2020. Femoropopliteal and tibioperoneal forecasts for angioplasty and stenting are based on two assumptions regarding the future role of infrainguinal primary stenting. The optimistic case assumes primary stents gain share, while the pessimistic case assumes that primary stents lose share.
